Transform Trauma Into Triumph

Who We Are

The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara is a place of safety, trust, and healing for children and youth who have experienced abuse, neglect, or have been a witness to violence. We are Niagara’s only dedicated Child and Youth Advocacy Centre — a welcoming, trauma-informed space where young victims can share their experience, stories, access support, and begin to heal.

Founded in 2008, our Centre is named in honour of Kristen French, a local teenager whose life was tragically taken by violence. Her story — and the strength of her family — continues to inspire our mission to create a community where every child is protected, heard, and given the chance to thrive.

Who We Are

Why We Exist

Child abuse is one of the most serious public health issues facing our communities.

In Niagara, at least one case of child sexual or physical assault is investigated each day. Without intervention, the long-term impacts of trauma can be devastating — affecting mental health, relationships, education, and life outcomes.

We exist to change that story.

Every day, we help victims become children again — giving them space to feel safe, to be heard, to build resilience, and to imagine a future free from fear. We do it without a waitlist, without cost to families, and without judgement.

Why We Exist

A leader in the field: The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre is proud to be part of the Ontario Network of Child and Youth Advocacy Centres

A Leader in the Field

The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre is proud to be part of the Ontario Network of Child and Youth Advocacy Centres, a growing group of organizations committed to advancing best practices in child abuse response and recovery. In 2024, our Centre also played a leading role in the establishment of the Canadian Association of Child and Youth Advocacy Centres (CYACC) — a new national body dedicated to strengthening the voice and impact of Advocacy Centres across the country.

This leadership reflects not only the strength of our Centre, but the shared commitment of our staff, partners, and community to ensuring that every Canadian child has access to the support they need and deserve.

Our Commitment to Niagara

We are more than a service provider — we are part of the fabric of this community.

We work in collaboration with:

  • Niagara Regional Police Service
  • Family and Children’s Services Niagara
  • Family Counselling Centre Niagara
  • Local Crown Attorneys and Victim Witness Assistance Program
  • School boards, mental health agencies, and community partners

Together, we respond to the urgent needs of vulnerable children, while also working to prevent future harm through education, awareness, and advocacy.

At the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre, we don’t just respond to abuse — we help break its cycle.

Because every child deserves to be safe. Every voice deserves to be heard. And every future deserves to be filled with hope.

A Message from the Executive Director
& President of the Board

Dear Friends,

It is with deep pride and gratitude that we share with you the 2024 Annual Report for the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre. This past year has been one of tremendous growth — a time of bold steps, meaningful innovation, and unwavering commitment to the children and youth of Niagara.

We have always been guided by a simple but powerful vision: that every child deserves to be safe, supported, and heard. In 2024, that vision came to life in remarkable ways. We were honoured to be selected by the Ministry of the Attorney General to deliver the Child Victim Witness Program for Niagara — a milestone achievement that significantly expands our capacity to support young victims as they navigate the justice system. This new role has strengthened our partnerships with the Crown Attorney’s Office and the Victim/ Witness Assistance Program and positions us to support more kids in more meaningful ways.

We are equally proud of the continued growth of Camp Acorn, Niagara’s first and only trauma-informed day camp. With expansion into Welland and Niagara Falls, Camp Acorn is helping more children build resilience and experience joy — often for the first time in a long time. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and program partners including the Niagara Catholic District School Board and the District School Board of Niagara, these camp experiences were offered at low cost or no cost to families. Like all of our programs, Camp Acorn is grounded in evidence-based therapeutic principles, but from the kids’ perspective, it’s also a lot of fun!

Another major milestone this year was the transformation of our lower level, including a complete renovation to create a new multi-purpose room and play space. These enhancements have allowed us to serve children more effectively, in a space that is both safe and welcoming. Coupled with the introduction of expanded in-house counselling and therapy services, we now guarantee that every Niagara child who needs help can receive it — without a waitlist and always free of charge.

None of these achievements would be possible without the collective efforts of our extraordinary staff and volunteers, our committed Board of Directors, our multidisciplinary partners, and the many donors whose compassion fuels our mission. Together, you have created a Centre that responds with care, adapts with purpose, and grows with vision.

As we look ahead, we do so with humility, determination, and hope. There are still far too many children who need our help — and with your continued support, we will be here for each one of them.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Vaughn Stewart, President & Board Chair
Brian Bratt, Executive Director

Awards

Marlene DeRose Spirit of Giving Award

The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre is proud to recognize the exceptional generosity of our supporters, whose kindness and compassion help shape a brighter future for children and families in Niagara affected by abuse and trauma. Our Marlene DeRose Spirit of Giving Award honours individuals who embody the true meaning of generosity— those who give not only their resources, time, energy, and heart, but also inspire others through their actions to make a lasting difference. This award celebrates the belief that giving is about more than a single act, but rather it’s about creating a legacy of care, community, and hope.

We are honoured to present the Marlene DeRose Spirit of Giving Award to John White, founder of the Niagara District Junior Golf Tour and the driving force behind our annual Kids Golfing for Kids fundraiser. John is passionate about helping children become champions, both on the course and in their everyday lives. His vision of encouraging youth philanthropy has inspired generations of junior golfers to give back. For over 16 years as a dedicated partner of the Centre and through decades of service to the Niagara community, John has led by example, instilling the spirit of giving in hundreds of young athletes across Niagara. His commitment to building a culture of compassion continues to make a profound impact on the Centre, and the children and youth we serve.

Frank Parkhouse Community Builder Award

The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre is honoured to recognize the unwavering support of our community partners. Through meaningful collaboration, these partnerships make it possible to deliver high-quality programs, services, and safe, healing environments for Niagara’s children and youth affected by abuse and trauma. Our Frank Parkhouse Community Builder Award celebrates remarkable leadership, compassion, and commitment from partner organizations that go above and beyond. This recognition is reserved for those who stand beside us in our vision to ensure that every child in Niagara who needs help, gets help.

We are grateful to present the Frank Parkhouse Community Builder Award to Duliban Insurance, the foundational partner of our BraveHearts campaign. As a third-generation family business, Duliban Insurance has woven community giving into the core of its identity through impactful fundraising events, generous financial support, and empowering employees to volunteer with causes close to their hearts. Guided by the belief that ā€œIf we take care of the community, the community will take care of usā€ (James Duliban), their support has helped expand trauma-informed programming, enhance trauma counselling services, and create safer spaces for children and youth to heal. We are proud to recognize Duliban Insurance for their outstanding leadership, generosity, and commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities across Niagara.

Doug French Helping Hands Award

The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre is pleased to recognize the generous contributions of our volunteers, who selflessly give their time, talent, and energy to support Niagara’s children and youth impacted by the life-altering effects of abuse and trauma. Our Doug French Helping Hands Award honours individuals whose extraordinary commitment to volunteerism strengthens our mission to help, heal, and ultimately end child abuse in our community. These individuals lead with heart, showing up year after year to make a difference where it matters most.

We are proud to present the Doug French Helping Hands Award to Joe Pillitteri, a longtime volunteer and the dedicated emcee of our annual BraveHearts Gala. Joe’s trademark humour and vibrant stage presence, paired with his unwavering generosity, have become a cherished part of the gala experience. Since our inaugural event in 2016, Joe has not only entertained our guests—he has inspired them to give, helping us raise vital funds in support of the children and youth we serve. His ability to connect with the audience, elevate the energy in the room, and champion our cause has made a profound and lasting impact. Joe’s passion for community makes him a true friend to the Centre, and an irreplaceable part of our fundraising success.

Camp Acorn

Launched in 2023 and expanded in 2024 to Welland and Niagara Falls, Camp Acorn is Niagara’s first and only trauma-informed day camp. Open to all children, the camp provides a safe, nurturing environment where fun and healing go hand in hand. Play Therapy & One-to-One Counselling

At the Centre, we provide children and youth with direct access to licensed mental health professionals specializing in trauma and child development. Using a combination of play therapy, talk therapy, and expressive techniques, our therapists help young clients process their experiences, build coping skills, and restore their sense of safety and control.

Thanks to donor support, services are offered at no cost and without a waitlist, ensuring that every Niagara child who needs help gets help. In 2024, 77 individual children received therapy support from the Centre.

2024 Treasurer’s Report

The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara is pleased to present the Treasurer’s Report for the financial year ending in 2024. The Centre has continued to meet its financial responsibilities with care and integrity. Our 2024 Financial Statements have been audited and confirmed to be presented fairly, in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.

In 2024, the Centre experienced a modest operating deficit of $18,649. This shortfall was due primarily to increased staffing costs following a thorough human resources review. The review ensured that our staff compensation is current, competitive, and reflective of the value our team brings to the children and families we serve. We view this as a tremendous and necessary investment in what matters most—our people.

Key Highlights

Program Expansion and Community Impact

This year marked significant growth in our services and outreach. Camp Acorn expanded to new locations in Niagara Falls and Welland, providing trauma- informed day camp experiences to more children than ever before. Our social support programming also grew, with new offerings in art, music, and movement therapy. Additionally, our in-house counselling and play therapy services saw a rise in both capacity and demand, allowing us to serve more families directly at the Centre.

Revenue Growth and Financial Strategies

Our commitment to long-term financial sustainability continued with the development of new fee-for-service programs and enhanced investment strategies. We also secured major multi-year operational grants from the Ministry of the Attorney General in support of victims of human trafficking and gun and gang violence, as well as the new Child Victim Witness Program. These grants represent a strong endorsement of the Centre’s leadership and impact across Niagara.

Expense Management

Even with increased staffing investments, the Centre maintained careful control over its expenditures. Our financial practices ensured that all spending was aligned with strategic goals and maximized the value of every dollar. This continued commitment to stewardship supports both immediate service needs and long-term sustainability.

Capital Investments and Infrastructure Improvements

In 2024, we completed one of our most exciting capital projects to date: the transformation of our lower level into a fully equipped, child-friendly multipurpose room and therapeutic play space. This incredible addition allows us to deliver services in a space designed specifically with healing, creativity, and comfort in mind. Our facility continues to evolve in step with the needs of those we serve.

Looking Forward

As we move ahead, the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre remains focused on delivering excellence in trauma-informed care and ensuring that every child who needs help, gets help. Our strategic investments in people, programs, and infrastructure have positioned us well for the future. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited for what lies ahead.

We offer our deepest thanks to our dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Your support makes this work possible and continues to be the foundation of our success.

In closing, on behalf of the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre, we extend heartfelt appreciation to everyone who helped make 2024 a year of meaningful progress and impact. Together, we are building a safer, stronger future for the children and youth of Niagara.
