Support for Young Victims and Witnesses Navigating the Justice System
The Child Victim Witness (CVW) Program at the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara is designed to support children and youth under the age of 18 who have been victims or witnesses of crime and are involved in the criminal justice system.
In partnership with the Ministry of the Attorney General, this free program provides court-related support for young people facing the difficult task of testifying in criminal proceedings. Whether the young person is a victim of or a witness to a reported crime, our team is here to help.
At the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and empowered.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Court Support
We recognize that being part of the justice process can be overwhelmingāespecially for children and youth. Our program provides support during the critical period following police involvement, and before, during, and after court proceedings. Our goal is to ensure that young victims and witnesses feel informed, prepared, and supported at every step of the journey.
What We Offer
Our CVW Support Workers are specially trained professionals who provide one-on-one assistance tailored to each childās unique needs. Services may include:
Individual Assessment
Every child is different. Our CVW Support Worker begins with a detailed intake process to assess the young personās needs, concerns, and understanding of the justice system. This may include interviews, questionnaires, and consultations with caregivers. When needed, additional assessments or recommendations for testimonial accommodationsālike remote testimony or the use of a support personācan be made in collaboration with the Crown Attorneyās office.
Court Preparation
We offer comprehensive court preparation in a supportive, age-appropriate way. Children and youth learn about:
- What to expect in court
- Roles of court personnel (Crown, Judge, Defence, etc.)
- The difference between direct and cross-examination
- Their rights and responsibilities as witnesses
- Available testimonial aids (e.g., screens, video testimony, support persons)
- Stress-reduction and coping techniques
Preparation may include a court tour, meeting with the Crown, and interactive resources to help reduce fear and build confidence.
Court Accompaniment
On the day of testimony, our CVW Support Worker can attend court with the child or youth, providing reassurance and emotional support. We can also serve as a Designated Support Person during testimony, if permitted.
Ongoing Coordination
We work closely with police, Crown attorneys, Victim Services, child protection workers, and other service providers to ensure that each young person receives consistent, informed, and collaborative support throughout the justice process. We also help keep families informed about court dates, changes, and expectations.
Support for Parents and Caregivers
We understand that having a child involved in the court system can be stressful for parents and guardians. We provide information, guidance, and emotional support to help caregivers feel confident and equipped to support their child. We also offer referrals to counselling and mental health services, if needed.
