Summer programs

Camp graphic demonstrate pottery, high ropes and pottery

At the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre, we believe every child should have a toolkit filled with healthy ways to express themselves and communicate their complex emotions and to cultivate a sense of agency and positive body image.

Our Summer programs were made to help children & youth develop these skills through a week of exploration of different physical activities or the exploration of multiple art modalities. Join us this Summer for one or two weeks! Our free week long programs are designed for youth ages 9 to 13 who have completed their investigative process with FACS Niagara and/or the Niagara Regional Police or those who have experienced abuse or trauma.

All expenses are covered including transportation to and from excursions and daily snacks and lunches!

Active Week July 11 to 15, 2022

Every child should be equipped with a toolbelt of mindful strategies and physical outlets to help connect them with their bodies, practice personal autonomy, and deal with life stressors. Listening to the body and finding ways to engage in enjoyable physical activities and mindfulness practices help to instill a strong sense of self and agency. The different modalities of physical activity can cultivate positive body image by focusing on empowerment, independence over one’s body, and self-compassion.  A healthy relationship with the body can lead to a boost in confidence, enhanced resiliency and emotional regulation, and improved self-esteem.

At the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre, children will develop these skills through a week of exploration of different physical activities. During activities, children will practice mindfulness by focusing on how their body feels while they are engaging in movement.

Participants can look forward to the following activities:

  • The opportunity to engage in multiple modalities of physical activity
  • Positively engage in trust building with peers through teamwork and healthy competition
  • Learn about their bodies and how to positively interact with them
  • Using sports and activity as a healthy form of emotional expression and coping
  • Increasing mindfulness and comfortability with movement
  • Soccer workshop led by head coach of local soccer league
  • Badminton lesson from experienced player
  • Day excursions to multiple locations in the Niagara Region such as Club jump and Brock University
  • End of the week excursion to Wild Play Whirlpool adventure park

Art Week August 8 to 12, 2022

Sometimes individuals have thoughts that need to be expressed, but this cannot be done using words. For example, thoughts that are too painful, too complex, or too overwhelming to put into plain language. Certain art modalities provide a rich language for children to give voice to their inner self, & express aspects of their mental realms and emotional thoughts. Tactile experiences can be meditative in nature and provide children with an opportunity to understand the self, communicate and cope with emotions, develop a sense of agency and self-esteem, and explore powers of creative self-expression, all while building confidence and fostering resiliency.

At the Kristen French Advocacy Centre, children will develop these skills through the exploration of multiple art modalities. Modality exploration includes pottery, sewing experiences, working with botanical and artificial dyes, painting, visual arts, a focus on role play and character expression through drama workshops as well as presentation of art accomplishments through an art show.

Art Camp will be held at the Kristen French Advocacy Centre, 8 Forster St. St Catharine’s. Participants of this camp can look forward to:

  • Handcrafting ceramic mugs and bowls
  • T-shirt and tote making
  • Exploring artificial and botanical tie dye
  • Creating optical illusions
  • Drama skits
  • Soap art, painting, crafting etc.

Additionally, students will be provided with the opportunity to showcase artwork to friends and family, in an art show at the end of the week.
