In memory of Cathy Collins, a long-time supporter and volunteer of the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara, we have established a free 12 week arts and education group for pre-teens ages 9-11 who have experienced abuse. Participants must have completed their investigation process with Family and Children’s Services Niagara and/or Niagara Regional Police Service.
Participants will focus on using creativity as a vehicle to enhance resilience in response to the experience of child abuse. It is intended to help youth better understand themselves & learn the power of creative self-expression.*
Cathy’s Kids will be held at The Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre Niagara Centre, 8 Forster St, St. Catharines. Participants of this program will cover the following topics: age-appropriate information on defining abuse, managing emotions, risky behaviour, understanding the self, impact of social media, family and friend challenges, building self-esteem and resiliency. This curriculum was developed with Foster Festival, our partner and facilitator of visiting artists. The group is facilitated by Lisa Sharik and Clelia Scala.
Lisa Sharik is an Ontario Certified Teacher and scholar who has worked with survivors of sexual assault for over 25 years and continues to provide public education in local schools to aid in the awareness and prevention of sexual assault.
Clelia Scala is a mask and puppet designer, collage artist, and illustrator. She makes masks and puppets for theatre and has taught people of all ages mask-making and puppet-making in classroom and workshop settings. Clelia has taken courses and workshops in painting, printmaking, shadow puppetry, and sculpture. She studied puppet construction and performance at the Humber Puppetry Intensive and at the New England Puppet Intensive.
The Centre is also pleased to have the support of a Family Counselling Centre therapist on site and available to group participants should individuals need to speak one on one. FCC counsellors are registered psychotherapists trained in trauma informed practice.
